If you are working without permission, you will be reported by your DSO through SEVIS, meaning the termination of your SEVIS record. This means you will have to leave the United States immediately and will not be allowed to return.

Depending on your program of study and your status, you will be eligible for the following employment opportunities:

  1. On-Campus Employment: For F-1 students whose status is Active in SEVIS may apply for this type of employment. This is specific to work that takes place on campus or at an off-campus location affiliated with the Institute. For example, working at a university bookstore or cafeteria.

F-1 students may apply for on-campus employment up to 30 days before the start of classes. To apply, you will need to talk to your DSO. If approved, you will receive a letter of approval from your DSO. This letter of approval will be required to apply for a Social Security Number (SSN). This is a must for students who wish to work.

When in school sessions, you may not work for more than 20 hours per week.
