Phillip L Graham once said, "Journalism is the first rough draft of history". Journalism is the art of writing about news-related themes and subjects for all mediums, both print, and non-print. Before any news can be published in newspapers or broadcasted by news channels, an individual must write down the ideas behind them. This person is called a Journalist. These Journalists are thoroughly equipped and schooled in the art of writing for news outlets because journalistic writing is very different from any other style of composition.

There are several steps included in the process of journalism. It all begins with gathering news from the local, national, or world community, and it ends when this news is disseminated via media channels. These channels include radio and television, newspapers and magazines, and now, the ever-present and ubiquitous Internet.

Journalism courses teach students about research, investigation, interviewing, reporting, and writing skills. It includes technical skills such as layout designing, web designing, photography, radio programming and production, video production, editing, among others. Students also learn a variety of highly transferable skills such as critical thinking, leadership, effective communication, meeting deadlines, and listening and working productively in a team. The course trains students to work under pressure while having a flexible approach to work.

Employability

“The purpose of journalism”, writes Bill Kovach and Tom Rosenstiel in The Elements of Journalism, “is not defined by technology, nor by journalists or the techniques they employ”, rather, “the principles and purpose of journalism are defined by something more basic: the function news play in the lives of people”. News has been and will continue to be that part of communication that keeps us informed about the changing events and issues of the world outside. Though it may be interesting or even entertaining, the most important value of news is as a medium for empowering the uniformed and keeping them aware of what is happening.

Journalism informs the public of important news and information. Journalists may work for newspapers or magazines, they may write behind-the-scenes for broadcast networks, confine their work to the Internet, or go on location to gather information on events. While some work from a quiet office, others put themselves in harm's way. Before they enter the field, however, most journalists pursue formal education.
